The Island Of Missing Trees
My Rating-5/5
This is the first book that I have read from the International Booker Longlist that was announced few days ago. Here is what I thought about it.
This book at its core is a love story. It is told from two different perspectives: the perspective of a child and that of a fig tree, which will allow the readers to draw parallels with the storyline of Klara and Sun in which we were told the story from the point of view of a robot.
This story consists of an eccentric character who prefers trees over humans and spends his time talking and tending to them quite similar to us bookworms who prefer books over humans any day.
This book feels like a short book given the number of social issues that it touches upon including but not limited to effects of war, intergenerational grief, the atrocities faced by gay people during that era, climate change.
The author has used simple language which while engrossing makes this book appropriate for even a beginner. This book is a combination of fiction and reality as many of incidents mentioned are real which makes the book all the more harrowing.
This book highlights the fact that in war there are no winners as there is destruction everywhere and as a result, animosity develops among the neighbors. The book has very rightly stated that the humans are the most dangerous creatures on the face of the earth as the level of destruction and hatred that has been caused due to our self-centred nature is profound and unmatchable.
This book makes me excited to read other books from the International Booker Longlist and share my views with all of you. This book will definitely provide a tough competition to all the nominees.
